Back to Reality...

I have to admit it: when I started this, I thought "I'll do great for about a month, and then I bet I'll fall off..."

Admitting your shortcomings is the first step to recovery, right?

In my defense, March was insane. After finishing my M.A. at the end of February, I was ready to crawl into bed for a week and ignore life in general. Unfortunately, I still work a full time job (with seniors who all have a mad case of senioritis), have to finish up some education classes, and was prepping to go out of the country for nine days.

Even with all of the craziness, going to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands was probably the best thing for me to do at this point in time. I came back exhausted with way too many pictures and only a very slight sunburn, but being able to physically leave everything behind somehow managed to help me recharge--a surprise in itself, since we all walked approximately 72.5 miles while we were down there.

And just in case you're curious, here's a brief list of some of the cool things we did:

  • multiple speedboat and water taxi rides between the islands,

  • visited the equatorial line,

  • explored the city of Quito,

  • saw sea lions everywhere

  • visited the Charles Darwin Research Center

  • lots of swimming

  • went snorkeling (and saw sea turtles, rays, sharks, and penguins)

  • hiked the Sierra Negra volcano

  • visited the tortoise breeding center

  • visited the largest market in Latin America

  • toured a convent and walked up into the towers of a basilica

  • rode in cable cars and hiked into the Andes

Being away without any looming responsibilities (other than hoping the six students who went would return unscathed) let me take a step back, and was actually a great help in motivating me to finish the rest of my thesis (even with 132 pages, it's only about half done). This trip was a graduation present to myself, but that doesn't mean I can slack off now that my diploma is in the mail--though I totally was slacking before the trip. Oops. But even a trip full of 18 hour days and multiple flights and constant activity was refreshing.

And honestly, if I can hike up a volcano in 92 degree weather, I should be able to finish a thesis.

So here's to getting back on track...and hopefully staying there!
